XR311 Combat Support Vehicle Description

The primary role of the vehicle is to provide high-performance
combat mobility, both on and off road, to which end it is fitted
with power steering, full-time automatic four-wheel drive, four-
wheel independent torsion bar suspension, disc brakes on all
wheels, three-speed automatic gearbox, centre-mounted transfer
gear case with inter-axle differential and controlled-slip
clutches in the front and rear differential, heavy-duty shock
absorbers, low pressure tires, each with an integral high-
pressure inner tube and a 5000 kg winch mounted at the front of
the vehicle.

The vehicle is constructed around a tubular safety cage, which
protects occupants should the vehicle turn over, and is covered
by a heavy-gauge sheet-metal body with a full-length skid pan
fitted underneath the vehicle.

The driver is seated on the left side of the vehicle with the
other crew members to his right. The gunner's seat can be
adjusted from the normal to a high vantage position for
surveillance and the seat may also be folded vertically to permit
the gunner to stand when firing weapons. Storage racks are
provided for 6 TOW ATGWs or 6 rounds of 106 mm ammunition,
depending on the armament installed. The glare-resistant two or
three part windshield is sloped to minimize reflections and may
also be folded flat or removed to permit the use of night vision
equipment.

The engine is at the rear of the hull and is coupled to a three-
speed transmission and a chain drive transfer case. The lower
end of the transfer case incorporates a limited slip differential
which divides power between the front and rear differential
assemblies. Each of the four wheels is suspended by double 'A'
assemblies and steering and steering knuckles, and incorporates a
torsion bar, spring and heavy duty shock absorbers.

An aluminum armour kit developed to meet the threat as defined in
the Required Operational Characteristic protects the crew,
weapons, stowed rounds and engine.

Variants

The basic vehicle can be used for a wide variety of roles
including ambulance, anti-tank, command and control,
communications, convoy escort, forward air control, military
police, mortar carrier and reconnaissance.
